What do you plan on keeping in your 110? While i have seen many good tanks use hob filters and skimmers on this forum, a 110g tank really needs a good skimmer if your going to be keeping any harder to keep fish or any corals at all. and most of these good skimmers are designed to be placed in a sump or plumbed in-line with a sump.

IME i have had little success (actually i failed) with hob and hob skimmers for saltwater tanks. I used a Emperor 400 (400gph) for a 40g tank and a Red Sea skimmer and never had much luck keeping even the hardiest fish. But a hob filter with some good DIY mods can provide decent bio filtration but i still dont think they are great for aeration as they dont collect from the surface of the water but deep in the tank which will create additional problems.

I know you already have bought all your filter stuff so i dont blame you for trying to use it but in the long run you will be much happier you spent the extra $200-400 for a sump, skimmer, and pumps.

thank you guys for all the info... another question... anyone ever heard of an ECO-Aqualizer? they claim u can use a hang on the back filter in conjunction with their product and your tank will be crystal clear along with saving money on water changes, supplements, etc. heres the link Eco Aqualizer Read what I read and they also have a 180 day money back guarantee.. this seems to good to be true.. ?

Waste of money, do a search on Eco Aqualizer on 3reef, there are a few members we all trust that have deconstructed them and found it to be a few magnets taped to a pvc pipe and covered with a fancy wrapper.
