We went out of town for 2 days and came back to find algae taking over everything! It is mostly on the bottom rock and glass. Some on the glass is hairy like. Could this be because we left the lights on the while we were gone? How do we control this and what additions to our CUC should we get?

    Currently we have:
    2 turbo snails
    2 soft snails?
    2 black britle stars
    1 white britle star
that little hard starfish you can see in the picture
    1 Fire shrimp
    Pipe Organ Coral

We are still in the beginning stages of starting our tank and need some help :-[

Absolutely because you left the lights on.

    How big is your tank?

Give it a good cleaning and a nice water change, and it should turn itself around.

A simple 24 timer is cheap way to manager your light. You can get one at any hardware store. Sometimes local fish stores will inflate the price for something you can get for much cheaper at Home Depot. :)

    Cheers
