I have setup my first 150 gallon high tank and decided to hard plumb it. Everything is done and flowing nicely, EXCEPT the lines going to my sump area are suckng air in along with water. The hole is about 7/8 covered. This is making a gurgling noise that is driving my wife crazy. I am not sure how to fix this. I tried putting an elbow in the baffle and that only made the noise worse. Any suggestions?

a quick fix is to put a small air line in the over flow, ... forgot what type of over flow do you have?

are you using a durso style drain? Can we get some pics of the overflow setup?

Okay just discover the term Derso pipe. However some fool manly me has already plumbed and glued everything together. I did decide to go ahead and put shut off valves on all my pipes though. So what about this. If I cut the overflow pipes and add a T connector then an elbow running an upward up with the end cap to drill would this do the same thing without having to rebuild my whole plumbing system which is going to be a major project considering the location.

The other thing that I have thought about is adding a elbow inside of the overflow pointed downward and possibly drilling a hole on the top part of this to allow air to escape that way. I am concerned that this will just create the same problem though.

Never glue what is in your OF box (standpipe) as you will need to get in there one time or another.

Hello, a little difficult without a picture, the hole in the end cap is there to allow air to be sucked in as to create an even flow. As I recall all the little nuances of mine I would say the return pump could be the culprit. What I found was you need the proper gph to match how fast the water is, through gravity, flowing into the sump. Too powerful a pump and the over flow can't keep up (creating gurgle, flushing) and not strong enough return and over flow backs up slightly creating a similar situation. Try buying a small valve that you can screw into your end cap, this gives you a multitude of adjustments on air flow. Many have done this, hole size doesn't matter as you regulate the air flow with the valve.
Secondly, what size, or gph, is your return? If deemed too powerful, a ball valve can be installed at the pump (easiest) or in line to regulate the return gph. Between these two steps you should not need to tear anything apart.

Maybe you can get a small right angle piece of pvc you can stick in the intake and point it down (towards bottom of tank) and it will lessen the amt. of air it sucks in?

you can just build a little durso that fits in there, doesn't looks like you have anything on the tank side of the bulkhead so that should be open to being added to
