My wifes co- worker gave us a 90 gallon glass tank today. The tank is approx 10 years old, so i was planning on redoing the silicone. Is this tank safe to use being a decade old? He also gave us a 350 magnum filter, any thoughts on the quality of this canister filter? We will be building a stand as the tank will weigh between 900 and 1000 lbs with all the LS and LR + water.

I don't believe you will have a problem out of the tank. Just remember to only remove the silicone that is in the corners, do not cut in between the glass. Use aquarium safe silicone. Let it dry for 24-48 hours, water test for a few hours. If no leaks, then you are good to go. If you have a leak, then you have to drain it, dry it and fix the leak. Then you have to wait another 24-48 hours. Plenty of videos on youtube.

If the canister filter and hardware is cleaned with vinegar, then I don't see a problem out of it. I think it's a good filter.

Your tank will weigh more than 1,000 lbs. More like 1,200-1,400 lbs.

Post pictures of what you have going on. I hope this helps

The filter is a good mechanical and chemical filter. I would not use it for biological filtration.

I'm gonna have to disagree and say that this is terrible advice.

The silicone that is in between the panes of glass, is the silicone that STRUCTURALLY holds the tank together and SEALS the tank so it will hold water. The additional bead of silicone that you see in the inside corners of the tank is simply there for one reason, to PROTECT the bead of silicone that is in between the panes of glass, and is the IMPORTANT part of holding the tank together.

If you have a leak in a tank, then the silicone that holds the tank together is obviously in bad enough shape that it is letting water pass in between the panes of glass. If this is the case, the structural integrity of the tank is compromised.

So when receiving a 10 year old tank, IMO you have 2 choices. Either completely disassemble the entire tank into 5 pieces of glass, clean the edges of the glass with a razor blade and acetone to remove all the old silicone, and then re-assemble the tank with all new silicone. If that isnt an option, then just set the tank up as-is and run it. Simply smearing some new silicone on the inside corners isnt going to be any different than just setting it up as-is. It wont do anything at all for the structural integrity of the tank, and it will only be a band-aide to any leaks the tank may have.
