The problem with lava rock is it can leak silicates into the water. I believe tahitian moon sand is essentially crushed down lava rock and running a product like phosban to remove silicates is essential.

i spray windex up down all over the place,i'm silly!...silly!
everywhere but directly in the tank.obviously it's not ideal but i don't think it's whats killing your fish, chuck the lava rock and get some carbon tough guy!

lava rock gone ...and i tried a few things my lfs suggested and they r doing good so far...i got a few damsels for now and they r doing ok i just need to get my nitrates in check my other par are good....must have been the lava rock....the idiot at the pet store said it would do no harm..so i took his word for it...ill never put anything in my tank again unless i know for sure its s.w. safe....the thing that gets me is that all my inverts survived...wouldent they be the 1st to go????another ? i have is would it be safe to boil my tap water then use a britta water filter to filter my water to use as top off water?just in between water changes?any thoughts would be great thanks here is a few pics of my tank no corals yet i dont feel safe putting them in yet...the pics arnt that great...cell phone pics..my tank is 8 months old..40g..w/20g overflow sump

a couple of years ago i lost a freshwater crayfish because of a plug in air freshener so now there is nothing anywhere near my tanks. I just recently lost my mantis shrimp and the first thing i did was scour the room for air fresheners or aerosols.
