Hey everyone I need some help. I have a 30 gal mini reef dosent have much in there yet. 30# LR, 30# LS, and 2 perculas. I have a emp. 400, power compact lighting, with 2 power heads. I was looking at hang on refugiums and was wondering if I still would need a the bio filter. Thanks everyone.

its a matter of opinion.i prefer to just use my lr as my bio filter.i use a skimmer,a little carbon, about half a cup on a tank your size, chaetto or calerpa, and a mechanical filter such as sponge or a carbon pad which does your mechanical and chemical filtering in one, something to filter out the big stuff.oh you want a hob refugium.theres not much room there.i would'nt bother with the bio and i'd just put some chaetto or caulerpa in it and a skimmer if it fits.

If you are going to use the LR as a biofilter, I would bump the amount in there up to at least 1.5-2lbs/gal. If you have that, you should be fine with just the chaeto and some sand.
