I've done the opposite in that I went from a FO to a reef. I can't speak to sps because so far, I've had zero luck :( I have always loved anemones any and all types. I think your maxi mini idea would be awesome! The question is like others have said, will you be content without the challenge of sps?

Is a doser out of the question? It sure made my tank easier. Can't wait to see what you do Cheryl. Your last tank was a stunner.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
It will come around for you OFK, I am embarrassed to tell you how many years I tried and failed.
Weird thing is I find corals so much easier to keep then fish.

    Thank you Matt. :)

With a bigger sump and a much larger volume of water than I am accustomed to a doser may be the solution.

I have gone from an SPS domintated reef tank (76g) to a larger (240g) FOWLR tank. I thought that I would really miss corals but I have found that the variety of interesting fish I have has made up for it. I was looking at a picture of my old SPS tank yesterday and although it was beautiful, I don't miss the upkeep required.

    Wow Cheryl,
I missed a thread if there was one about what happened to your cube?

    Sorry to hear.
With the knowledge that have, I'm sure you'll have a nice system in no time.

I keep a mixed reef, that is heavy in sps- somehow it seems to work for me without much work really. But I do know it could change in a heartbeat too.

I was tankless for 5 years.
I missed the hobby the entire time.
For me it was moving around too much.

I've always been more of an invert and coral person.

Biotope set ups like mangroves or anemones with damsels are two of my favorite themes.

Your system is large enough to keep interesting. Now I'll have to go back and look at your sps tank if there is a thread.

    Hi Todd,

Moving, the nano is old. Time for a bigger tank for scaping purposes and larger volume of water for stability.

    How old is your tank?

Longest I have gone without a tank since college is 6 months and college was along time ago.
I am always day dreaming about some aspect of the hobby. My BF just shakes his head tunes me out.

A lot of good points of view and opinions have lead me to the reality that sps is really what my hearts wants.
Now that I have thought about the total system volume if I go with a 40 gallon breeder for the sump the system overall will be more stable, no daily tinkering that is required of a nano.
As Matt pointed out a doser or even a kalk stirrer (man those things are expensive) will enable me to have a more automated and more trouble free set up.

I just needed to rattle it around with others. Thanks to all that contributed to the topic.:)

Hello again, OH I see, you're moving, so a breakdown was inevitable.

My 125 has been in existance since May of 2011. I was only going to have FOWLR, but all that seemed to change.
While I now have many large colonies, just about all started with a small frag.
So, it's really been up with anything at all in the DT about 2.5 yrs.

Keep in mind, you can make or get on sites like CL lots of good, usable stuff for your reef tank.
I keep every type of coral without contollers or dosing pumps, no Ca reactor, etc.
    The last 9 months, about a 10% WC/month.

Personally, IMHO, I think you should go with a bigger DT, and a bigger sump, even a rubbermaid something similat to my DIY sump- but that is must my opinion FWIW.

And BTW, My M-M Carpet Nem doesn't/hasn't eaten any of my fish ever, and nearly 2 years.

I can't wait to see your build!!

Personally, I wouldn't be able to stay away from the sps. Maxi minis are pretty awesome and there are most definitely color combo's out there that rival the nicest acro's. At the same time, I just don't think it would be as satisfying as sps. I love to see that day to day and week to week growth once an piece gets dialed in ya know? I feel like it wouldn't be the same as with solely maxi's. Just my opinion!
