First off let me say this is my first tank and I am planning on a reef tank mostly soft corals although I do have the lighting for anything.

    My set up
27 gallon cube with 32lbs of live rock and a penguin 200 HOB filter.
Power head I was told to buy (and did) is a hydor 750. Tank has been up for well over a month and totally cycled added my clean up crew and a emerald crab after a big diatom bloom.
My problem is that it appears I have had a slight influx of red slime algae (actually looks purple like but slimy and stringy a little) they are in lower flow areas). I have moved the power head everywhere but I don't seem to get great water movement and I'm wondering what I may be able to do to help solve this issue. Bigger power head? Another power head? Size? Placement? I'm starting to get frustrated.
    Thank you!

I would just get another and place in on the back wall just opposite the current one. If flow is too strong aim it more towards the surface.

It's not unusual to have a cyano bloom after cycle.

    I have a 28 gallon and I like a lot of flow.

You could try them on a wave maker as well.

As coralline said a cyano bloom in a new tank is normal. Even is stable tanks a little cyano in some dead spots is not uncommon and IMO not exactly a bad thing either. As long as it doesnt overrun things and cover the entire tank a little algae in your system goes a long way in removing nitrates, phosphates, and silicates as well as providing a natural food source for many fish. Im not a fan of sterile systems

Size of a powerhead isnt everything, it is better to have more smaller PH than 1 large one. That way you can help eliminate dead spots and customize flow better. The koralias are nice but they have very linear flow making it even more important to have multiple in a reef so you can them up right reducign deadspots without blasting anything.

Good luck, IMO flow is one of the most difficult things to get right. After a year I am still playing with my powerheads to try and get the flow just right.

Would you go with another 750 or smaller? And same location other side of tank aiming for the same location?

I have the nano 425 units and they seem pretty weak but might do the job on a 28 gallon to help add more flow and get rid of dead spots. Unless you plan on going mostly sps that you want to be careful to not have too strong of a flow. LPS and softies getting blasted are not happy corals and will not feed, expand, or do real well long term

Dont toss it, they are good powerheads!!! Like everything out there, each brand will have pros and cons. Koralias are cheap and provide good flow and they are almost dead silent. They can also be aimed which is nice and they have good cutomer service. The only downside is the flow is pretty linear so you need multiple to set up a good flow pattern and remove dead spots.

I had a 750 and 2 425s on my 46 bow myself and just upgraded to a vortech mp10. Originally I was going to ditch the 750 but ended up switching out one of the 425s instead. If you have the cash Vortech is the way to go!!! Many people also use tunze but i have no personal experience with them

Welcome to the hobby of conflicting information. It may be a science but certainly not an exact science. Every individuals experience is different with different tanks and equipment.

To be on the safe side personally I would go with one more power head just one size down.

You can always bounce flow of the sides to decrease intensity.

With all that said, what you are seeing is typical of newer set ups. Algae blooms will wax and wane for some time during the first several months.

From the image it appears you do not have your clean crew yet. When your sure the cycle is complete acquiring a clean crew should be of assist.

I'm no expert but Chill out! This is going to happen. I'ts a immature tank for its first year. Even with live rock it takes time for everything to stabilize. Algae has been around for millions of years and your tank.. A month it wins hands down. Some experts may have an easier time starting a new tank but this is normal. Be patient, make sure your doing water changes with good clean water and relax.
What kind of cuc is with your emerald crab?
