Keep in mind, most crabs (including hermits) are omnivores. While they do eat some algae, they will also need some meaty foods, as well. That's one of the main reasons IMHO that they eventually go rogue in some tanks, killing fish, sessile inverts, and even each other. That's also why I feed extra fish food and supplement their diet with raw meat. :)

depending on how many you have, probably the LFS will give you some. Whenever I sell any hermits, I will always give extra.

Also what kind of crabs do you have? Red or blue? Red tend to be more aggressive and dont really mix well with blues.

I have actually had this happen too... slowly. For me it's because my tank is too clean and not enough food for everyone to go around. I've had margarita snails die off mostly, but I have a funny feeling that is because of my hermits killing and eating them because of lack of food. So far all my astrea snails and Trochus snails are doing fine though. I have had a number is hermits just disapear! I use to have 2 blue leggs, 6 red leggs, 1 hawaiian reef, and a scarlet...all I have left is the scarlet, hawaiian reef and 4 red leggs. If you only have enough food for a certain amount of CUC then they will die off until only that certain amount can be sustained in your aquarium. I don't think it's a water issue or you would have die off more frequently. What is going on here sound identical with the issue I was having with my CUC. I bought some dried seaweed and place small pieces in the tank (just let them float to the bottom and settle wherever) and the hermits will find the pieces and eat them. The snails, I don't think you can do too much for. Possibly tie dried seaweek to a rock and hope the snails find and eat it. Other than that, if snails die off, more food for your hermits. You're system will keep alive when it can with the amount of food in can provide for only a certain amount of CUC depending on how clean or dirty your tank is... that is if you don't suppliment feedings.
