having to pill water about 2 times a week

Yeah i go through about 5 gallons every two days due to evaporation. Was a huge pain before my ato. Best money I think I ever spent on my tank.

wow, those of you evaporating 2+ gallons a day, that's a lot!!!

Mine is about a gallon a day... and I thought it was pretty maxed out...

As far as a ATO is concerned, the cheapest and easiest way to do it is gravity feed from a bucket and some 1/4 tubing... but that's not the safest way to do it, but could get you started until you find a system that works best for you.

I personally use an Aqualifter pump that is set to a VERY slow drip rate using a small valve, from my 5 gallon RO/DI storage container. It does the job, but I have to keep a trained eye on it.

I'll also say this about auto-top offs:

cheap, easy, safe. pick two. ;D

 

i'm guessing you need a pump as well?
