Very true...I just know FL F&W can be very unforgiving to people who collect sealife with out the proper permits. I would imagine HI is just as protective of their marine resources if not more so. I've been visiting HI for over 20 years and I have seen first hand the changes to the reefs that are close to shore as tourism has continually increased. You have to go to some of the more remote locations to find the more unspoiled reefs anymore. One of my favorite snorkel sites in HI used to be a lagoon on the north shore of Kauai that is protected by a very large offshore reef. 20 years ago you could find all kinds of corals, fish and inverts just a couple feet from the shoreline...today the lagoon is mostly filled with rocks covered in algae with a few corals trying to hang on and a few fish.

Anyway, it's late and I'm rambling, LOL! To the original poster...have a great time in HI...just make sure you know what you are doing before you try to gather any souvenirs.

You also have to consider trying to get it back to the mainland. Lots of things are restricted going into and coming out of Hawaii.

Well thanks for all the info guys. I wasnt planning on taking any corals or fish. Just something sort of piece for the tank that would be a cool little reminder. Not trying to damage any of the natural habitat or anything, having taken a lot of marine bio and environmental issues classes at the U of Washington I'm pretty conscious of those problems.

LOL! Didn't mean to imply you were trying to damage the reef or anything. Just didn't want you to risk having a vacation turn sour over a few pieces or rock.

How's life in the great Pac NW? I used to live in Port Angeles...sure do miss the water and the mountains...the dreary winters, not so much, LOL!

Ya, we didn't have AC when we lived up there...hardly ever needed it...were I am now it's been close to or over 100 every day for two weeks...sure glad I have AC now...and the corals would all be soup without it.

    Have fun in Hawaii!

Federal law prohibits the taking of liverock. Empty Shells are legal to take anywhere I think. Sand is regulated by the states, most coastal states prohibit the taking of sand.
