    Hello everybody,
I am scared to death of getting ich in my display tank but wanted a blue hippo tang so I set up a quarantine(which was the first time I quarantine a fish) went and bought my fish, acclimated him for 45 minutes. this morning he had ich and I had ammonia in the quarantine. Now I am not sure if I want a blue hippo anymore because of ich, what is your experience with your blue hippo?

And if I choose not to get another one what other fish should I get
    I have a yellow tang
    3 banggai cardinals
    2 clowns
    1 diamond goby
    6 chromis

Very sorry to hear that. I have three total in different tanks. When I bought my first one it got ich pretty quick (It was a small one). I put it in qt and treated it with copper. The ich went away and I have not had problems since. How big is your tank? IME If your tank is large enough buy a larger size hippo. They're less likely to get ich as easyily as the smaller ones.

why do you have ammonia in your qt tank? Tangs in general are prone to ick , blue hippos in particular. How long did you set up the qt tank before putting hippo in? Did it completely cycle? I have a feeling he got ick because the qt tank was not done cycling. Make sure you feed good food with HUFA and alot of seaweed

You wouldn't need to cycle if you used water from your DT. If you used everything new, I would have given it a month to cycle. How large is your DT? How large Is your QT? How large was the Hippo? How long has the QT been up and running? What are the parameters of the QT? These are questions that we need answered to find out the problem.

Ok i use water from my dispaly so did not think that i needed to cycle the quarantine.
My display is 120 gallons and the quarantine is 10 gallons, maybe on the small side but that all I have. I use a sponge from my display in the filter, use a pvc pipe for the fish to hide.
I set up the quarantine one day before I got my fish.
The hippo was 2 1/2 " long so I would say medium size.
    My parameters are
    ph 8.0
    ammonia 1.0
    no2 0
    no3 0

i tested only ammonia before I went to pick up the fish and it was 0.
so I think I did everything right but obviously something went wrong.
I feed the fish yesterday and gave him a little to much could that of done it?

I bought mine pretty small...i observed him in the store for about 30-45minutes (yes i actually sat in front of the tank he was in and watched his behavior). I made sure that all the fish in the tank he was in were healthy. After all this time he never displayed any symptoms of ich (scratching on the rock, pipes whatever they can scratch against) No visible spots, no labored breathing, swimming, **GRAZING**, and ate brine shrimp upon my request of the LFS...once doing my assessment i bought it...took it home..drip acclimated right into the DT...i dont QT...i think that the fish has enough moves...not saying my way is the right way, but i just dont do it...never have, never will...I am confident enough of the health of my fish in the DT and feeding habbits that even IF a fish brought in ich, they would be able to fight it off no problem....i cant stress enough to watch a fish for a while before you buy it....i havent had a problem with ich doing so...i mean your gonna give the LFS $40-50+ for a fish...make them work for the $ by putting up with u for an hour and making sure that fish is healthy before you even take him home.

A sponge and tank water don't contain enough bacteria to break down that amount of ammonia. The QT needs to be cycled like any other tank to be effective at processing ammonia.

You can do water changes in an emergency. A bigger fish in a smaller tank will need more water changed to keep up with the ammonia produced.
