    thanks for the input, 5 watts per gallon, would make it a 300 watt , for a 40 gallon with a sump that holds 20 gallon, seems like it is more than is needed

    5w/gal is the recommended value, if less the heaters on longer wasting energy, if more its wasted energy. google w/gal for a heater.
