Thats great that everythings ok,and yes that sounds like a ground fault interupter(gfi)and that's good to.If anything shorts out in the tank it should trip and kill power from the outlet,so it sounds like the heating element didn't come into contact with the water.Which is probably what saved ya.I would still do a water change and change your carbon because some elements have phosphorous in them.

check into an ato unit too. got mine from foster n smith for around 30 bucks shipped. just have a bucket full of water and it's gravity fed with a float valve. very simple and it helps keep salinity stable.

was'nt it the plastic suction cup that melted? the one as on a titanium heater lol
I agree time for ATO or atleast to pay abit mort atenton to your tanks water levels , well I take that bak as I dont know your set up but unless your heater was in your sumps return chanber , then you must have evaporated a lot of water to half expose a heater. Anyways you should be concerned about the salinity of the tank swinging with that much evaporation so yea +2 on the Auto Top Off
good luck and I'm sure all will be fne with the fish as you've taken good action from the start CARON for me any disaster =carbon lol
