I have a 55 gallon long tank and am wanting to do a sump, but want to make sure I have/know everything I need to complete it. I want to make the sump just a small 10 gallon at the moment and maybe later on upgrade. So my question is, what size submersible heater would I need to keep my sump and tank at 78F? I would put the heater in my sump.

You best bet for a sump is to start larger sooner. You'll find ouy quickly how you run out of room in a small tank. Plus its less effort bigger the first time, once & done.

For heater size figure the total amount of tank volume you would have (minus rocks, etc etc), and go from there.
