Today at 5 pm the temp in my clownfish fry tank was 83 degrees. At around 8 pm tonight the temp had risen to 99.8 degrees. All but 4 of the fry are now dead.I was wondering how I could prevent this in the future. Is there something that is almost full proof? Thanks in advance.

I'd say ditch the heater. I don't believe you're running a MH lighting on it.

Was the heater on a controller or just by itself? The heating control on a heater is very cheap and in my experiences usual fail in the on position. The nicer controllers have a way more reliable on/off control and the temperature is usually more accurate as well.

How to avoid it in the future? Invest in a good heater.

    Use a temp alarm.

Depending on what you want to spend. I would definitely get a good heater. I would also get a controller that has a temp sensor. That way when the temp reaches an unwanted level, controller turns the power off to the heater.

unfortunatly a controller can fail, as I have learned. I bought a JBJ heater with controller and it still nuked my tank by going up to 98.6. I still would recommend a controller with the addition of a thermometer wtih an audible alarm. Unfortunately it will only help if you are home but...........

    sorry for you loss

I have had them stick on before...... luckily I have always noticed it before it got out of hand. A temp alarm would help.

A controller like a NeptuneSystems AquaController and wireless modules. I have mine set to kill power to the heater at temps above 73.9*. The only way it could fail is if the temp probe for the controller failed.
