I would put the thermometer in or on the DT as its easier to monitor at a glance when its there IME

It is not the reading but the actual submersible thermometer I am talking about. I worded it wrong previously.

Oh sorry, I get you now

In that case in the sump also, but with as much distance as possible from the heater
otherwise it will only control temp in a localised area

But Crimson Ghost below, has a much better answer than mine
and he is right now I think about it
losing flow and heat would be a double whammy in event of power failure.

It should be in the display tank still - you are referring to the probe right? I have my probe in the DT and heater in the sump which is in my basement. Most people will warn agaist heaters in sumps due to power outtage and pump failiur -- just food for thought.

I agree with crimson, if the return pump fails, your heater will only be heating the sump. That said, on my new tank, I have my heater and probe in the sump, at least for now. This is for other reasons though. Also, the tank is 93g, which has a lot of buffering capacity, so, I'm not too worried about heat being off for a while. I may put a backup heater in the display when I go on vacation though.

Excellent point, putting a heater in the DT is exactly what I do when I leave for vacation.

Looks like I am the only one putting the temp probe in the DT … hmm, odd man out I guess (better than odd ball !) I do this because my sump and fuge are in the basement and I am concerned with my DT temp and not my sump. This lets me regulate my heater in the sump as required to adjust the temp in my DT (located 15 feet away and in a different room).

My only concern about putting the probe in the DT is if the pump failed the heater would boil the sump.

Not really - the heaters are set to a temp, so it wouldn't pump up the heat past the heater setting as they have internal probes as well. But a valid concern.

Or is this a probe that controls the heater? If so ... absolutely I agree

If the power goes out it wouldn't that cut off the heater too :p

My Via Aqua Titanium heater just came in last night and I wanted to put my probe in the DT and the heater in the refuge, but the probe wire length is pretty short, so I guess they’ll both end up below but as far apart as I can get em. I have a separate digital temperature probe in the DT, but I suppose my heater controller will read higher than my DT.
