As long as you put your temp probe in the DT, the heater will do what it needs to to keep that temp. I have had mine this was for only a few weeks since i set my tank up, but my temp stays very stable and the heater doesn't seem to have any trouble keeping up. I run a herbie overflow, but you would just have to make sure your water level is high enough to cover the heater.

I was just thinking, I could see myself draining the overflow, to work on the tank and forgetting about it. That's me though most people are probably less adhd though

i guess that could be an issue, but most decent heaters turn off automatically if you leave it out of water, although i wouldn't rely on them to turn off. mine is low enough in the overflow that even if i turn my return off, it will stay submerged. If you were drained and were working in the overflow, surely you would remember the heater that is in your way ;)
I was not sure if this was acceptable either before i tried it, and found very little info online, but what i did find said it was ok, and i have had no issues. Oh, also i don't have doors on my stand yet, so i can always tell the exact temp of my tank and it is stable.

I think I may try it in the overflow! I may have to raise the standpipe to make it fit though.
