Title says it all. Got home a few mins ago and noticed everything looked bad. My only question is what to do at this point. Do I want to somewhat quickly bring it down or do I want to do it very slowly over the next day. I'll start searching the forum for answers but wanted to get a thread started in case I can't find anything. Thanks in advance.

Put a fan running across the water. Is the heater set at 90, or did the tank just get that hot from the heater improperly working? How's it doing now?

No, the heater was set at 80, but somehow it never off. I've yanked it out because I wouldn't won't to trust it even if I could mess with it and get it to go off. I've got a backup heater, but just wasn't sure if I need to quickly or slowly bring the temp back down and over how much time. Thanks.

You're prob safe with taking the heater out. I would say try & lower the temp about .5 to 1 degree per hour.

What brand heater do you have?(the one that "broke")

    It's a stealth. I've had it for a little over a year.

Yes I forgot to mention this.

Bags with ice, better yet, 20oz or 2 liter frozen bottles. that will lower yor tamp at 1d/hr, depending on your size tank.

In my 29g I have to use 2, 20oz pop bottles to lower it one degree/hr.

I agree, get some bags filled with ice and put them in your tank.

You could also do a small water change, turn off the lights and turn on some fans.

Same thing happened to me not long ago, lost most everything, only a few survived.

Remove the heater, turn on some fans, add ice but be careful you dont want to drop the temp too quickly.
