Heaters-which ones?

I would recommend two heaters slightly undersized. Ever see what a heater can do to a tank if it malfunctions. I had one sized to my tank and it shorted out. When i got home from work my tank was almost 130F, lost 90% of my tank, only thing that lived was my two clowns. Happened at my LFS also. So i always recommend two smaller heaters. It will not be as bad if one malfunctions.

 

At work (LFS) we use two heaters for more even distribution and the reason mentioned above....the probability of failure. Not to be a stick in the mudd but the cheaper heaters usually break within a few years max. I used the Ebo-jager's my dad had when he was in the NAVY until last year. Then i switched to some hydor heaters in fear of a malfunction....they are about 13 years old and still work great heating my top off water. Jager and hydor seem to have the best quality for a reasonable price, jager has been around longer but is now manufactered by ehiem which is a great company. If I get another heater it will definatley be an inline one, probably a Hydor.

 

For a 120gl tank what wattage would you reccomend?

Also, kind of off the subject, but I needed to replace the batteries in my thermostat last night. The battery light was blinking. I took out the tripple A's and at one end that holds the battery, the little contact piece was corroded. It was dried out and white. I took a screw driver and knocked off all of the white stuff and scraped the contact off pretty good. At least I thought I did. I checked the batteries with a battery tester and they all check out good.

Is there something I should use to clean off that one contact in the thermostat. I had wondered about vinegar.

What do ya'lll think?

How long did your Won last? I've heard horror stories on major returns (a few etailers discontinued selling them do to such a high return rate).

 

The previous owner of the tank had bought it. If he bought it new then it was probably about 2 years old.

Which brand of heater would you reccomend?

I've used Ebo's for the last 15 years But I'm on the look out for a better one now, I don't like the thermostats used in Ebo's. I stick them on at 82 degrees, and plug them into my controller that is set for 80 degrees. I don't depend on their thermostat anymore.

 

If you find one let me know, however, I'm probably going to go ahead and order a couple this evening.

I have had no problems with my WON brothers. I was turned onto them by my brother who has been in the saltwater hobby for over 9 years now as well as my father. They both use WON. I have had good luck with them as they have.

The Hydor is a great unit also from what I have read and seen. I suggested to Cindy what I have experience with and know others who have experience with them. The LFS I frequent weekly uses them as well and has for over 5 years according to the owner with not one problem.
