I used to run 2 heaters just in case one failed, I have had them fail in the past. I have recently got new heaters, rena smart heater, it seems to be doing a good job and in my plastic sump it shouldn't burn the plastic because the heating element is internal and the outside is made from almost indestructable resin which means you can hold it and not get your hand burnt. Plus if the sump ever dried out from a crack or something the heater turns itself off instead of burning out or causing a fire.

as said by Invert phil - 2 heaters offers security if one fails - but a good quality one , with 1 spare in the cupboard under the tank is also good IMO

titanium heaters are great for salt water
