    Hello and welcome back :)

Yes, the skimmer can be just about anywhere – it depends on which skimmer you have really, different designs give way to more flexibility.

The tank drain should not all funnel through a skimmer and then the balls – it should be split. I would drain the tank and then skim where the water collects (so the skimmer is not inline). The fuge is a different animal – can you tell me a little bit about your fuge, specifically what you are growing in it and then we can discuss flow, lighting ect.

I e-mail the previous owner of the sump and here what he said.

Looking at the sump with the refugium at the back the water comes in on the right hand side then flows under the wall to the large center chamber. In this chamber you can place the protein skimmer but i ran it outside of the sump all together. You'll see on the back left hand corner of the center chamber there is a nipple leading into the refugium, you'll need to place a small pump or power head there to get the water into that chamber. The water will then fill up that back chamber and overflow into the first chamber to the right completing a circuit. The small chamber all the way to the left is where you place the pump that returns the water to the tank.

I don't know if im crazy about this set up but check it out I have a picture of my sump on the previous page.

Any idea what's best skimmer in or out of the sump?

Ok, so our assumptions here were mostly correct. less the addition of the pump to feed the refugium. its not a bad design at all since you can regulate the refugium to be slow flowing.

I prefer the skimmer to be in the sump - just in case anything ever flows over the top ;-)
