You will need tests for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. The API saltwater master test kit is a good way to go for tank startup, includes what you need and is not very exspensive. You will need a heater if one is not included with your tank.It would be good to have most if not all of your rock while cycling so that it can become colonized with bacteria.Using dry rock will save you alot it just takes a little longer for it to become colonized with bacteria.Of couse you will need a good quality salt mix and a hydrometer or refractometer for checking your salinity.A refractometer would be much more accurate.

I like Instant Ocean and Reef Crystals, I alternative using both types, both are reasonably priced.

Now see with the wife this is where is gets tricky, educate her too much and she will figure out what things cost and notice when you add new items to the tank. My significant is totally in the dark and I like that way. :smokin:
