i am going to switch my 55 gal fresh water tank to salt. i do have some experience but limited. Right now i have a 10 gallon nano salt so i have been gaining some experience. i have a coralife light with twin 65 watt day/antic blue lights in it. A fluval 350 for mechanical filtration. two powerheads for current and a heater ofcourse. i plan ofcourse to use live sand with about a 4" bed as well as live rock (45 lbs). my ultimate goal for this tank is fish and some soft hardy corals maybe a hardy anemone as well. i have been reading so much on the internet that now i am not sure of something. my question for yall is how imperitive is a protein skimmer or any other related filteration method. another question is the only problem i am having with my nano tank is nitrate levels other than once a week water changes what are my options. i saw this aquaripure system(not sure about spelling) on the internet anyone have any experience with this on nitrate. any suggestions would be welcome.
    thanks in advance

    Hello and welcome to 3reef
In my opinion a protein skimmer is a must in a saltwater reef tank.

Welcome to 3reef. +1 on the protein skimmer. I have heard that some go without but I am sure you will find most will agree to having one.

protein skimmer i consider to be a must. i know one guy who does not run one, but he also runs bare bottom. also i wouldn't use live sand, nitrifying bacteria cannot survive in a bag with no food to keep them goin(also look at the experiation date on one of those bags, there is no way that "live" bacteria can live in a bag for close to two years). i would use a dry sand and just add a cup of real live sand from a LFS out of one of their refugiums sp?.

I ran without a skimmer for a year and a half, but now that I have one I wouldn't go back. For such a small investment, compared to coral, it's really a one time expense that's worth it.

If nothing else when you show off your tank it looks cool. You open up the cabinet and to the untrained eye it looks like you have some kind of space technology running under your tank lol.
