    Hello,

I am new to the saltwater aquarium hobby. I am preparing to set up my first tank. I have acquired a Finnex 30 gallon M tank. I liked the open top and built in refugium over the red sea max. I have filled the tank with RO/DI water to leak test and test the equipment. So far everything is looking good.

I have hit a snag with building a stand. I have a outer orbit 250w HQI with 4 T-5 lighting system, total 355w output for the tank. I am worried this may be to much for my tank, although I definitely want SPS in the future. So I am building a skeleton stand to test out distances from the top of the tank to the light for evaporation and heating issues. From what I can tell that light will be plenty powerful.

Anyways I will put up some pictures once I have my skeleton stand up, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

If anyone cares to answer the following question,

What should the bubbles in a protein skimmer look like? In all the pictures I see it is almost a white frothing mass, not bubbles. The all-in-one skimmer with the finnex is creating much larger bubbles compared to that. I am hoping this is only because I am running fresh water and it has not had time to break in. Anyways, I will post pics of my step-by-step ups and downs with this experiment of mine once I can get under way in earnest.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Right now, you don't have any proteins to skim (DOC's) so it makes sense that you are getting odd bubbles. Not only that, the higher you go in salinity, the better a skimmer works. With freshwater, you have no salinity so this all makes complete sense.
