Wow ! is all I can say! Thanks to all you out there for the Info. after 20 years I just might be able to have the Reef tank I always wanted [I Hope] I started my tank on Feb.2 46 Bowfront set up with just a AquaClear hang on filter with a surface skimmer basic set up ,heater , Perfecta Strip Eclipse Fluorescent light. 80 pounds of live sand , about 45 to 50 pounds of live rock ,I know I need alot of upgrads to go.. I've got: 3 Chromis,3 Clowns, Yellow Tang, Neon Dotty Back, lawnmower Blenny, Scooter Blenny, Dragon Goby, Arrow Crab,Emerald Crab,Anemone Crab, 5 or so Hermit Crabs Turbo Snail, Lima Scallop,xzena,mushrooms,polyps,Sun Coral,and Calerpa growing . Been doing 5gal. water changes every Fri. But have lost 3 fish within a couple of days . Just went though treatmemt of Ruby Reef and am Doing Kick-Ick now. The next thing I was told to get is a UV, well it help my fish from getting sick ? fish dying hurts more than I thought . I don't want to give up trying to make this work I love it to much!!

 

Not to be a downer, but it seems that you have an a lot of fish and critters for such a new tank. Usually it is best if you add a fish, wait a few weeks for the biological filter to catch up, then add another. Anyways, good luck, hope everything turns out good!

remember paitence and common sence prevales in this hobby .

 

Go slow and all will be well.

You may need to increase frequency and amount of water changes for a while and let your bio-filter mature a bit before adding more fish.

Welcome to 3reef! Overload will robinson, Overload!!!!!!!!!!!! Way too many fish and IMO too soon for corals..... What are you testing for??? I bet you have high nitrates and possibly ammonia too.

I've been taking water in to be tested at the LFS they tell me that everything looked good . Nitrate 20,Nitrite 0 ,PH between 8.0-8.4 and no sign of Ammonia,that my tank is doing what it should, telling me it's ok to keep adding fish and corals to my tank . I've got alot to learn ,thanks for the advise.

 

The man at the LFS said that because my well water tested hard at 425+ Alk 300ppm+ that the Calcium was so high I could do corals ,so I thought I'd give it a try. sun coarl seems to be doing good .salinity is .024 ,temp. 78 I'm in the dark not really knowing and am trusting what he says . Your right, until I can learn more I won't be adding anything !

 

A LOT of LFS's out there just want to sell you stuff. Their staff is underqualified and just want to sell stuff. If your LFS told you all this stuff would be OK in a tank so young, I wouldn't trust them to watch my dog for an hour. Read up on this site, and do a lot of research. 3reef is a great place to start, lots of good info on here. Slow down, take your time.

I am not trashing what you have done in any way. I had a conversation with a friend who is also a member on here not too long ago about how fortunate I am to have 2 friends that are experienced reef keepers and to have found this site. Without this I probably would have gone to the LFS and took their advice for the gospel. Do some research and get some advice beyond the LFS. I think you will find some differences.
