I have two swing arm hydrometers and a refractometer,my findings were that with proper care, both of my hydrometers are right on (or very, very, close) for accuracy. It's nice to have the refraco to check them against.I believe alot of hydrometers are not accurate, and without another means to check them, you may never know. But an accurate hydrometer is great for quick "spot checking" when used and cleaned properly.I still use both.

When I first started my tank I bought a Instant Ocean Swing Arm Hydrometer from Petco. Then a couple months later after reading the forums I began to wonder if it was really accurate. Eventually bought a refractometer and was waiting to see the dreaded thought of it reading 1.021 instead of 1.026. Then came to find out the hydrometer was actually pretty close to the refractometer.

I use the refractometer now though just because it's easier just to pull some drops of water and check and I don't have to dunk the hyrdometer into the tank.
