Hello I am new to the hobby, I have yet to even fill my tank, but I have almost all of the equipment I need and aquarium fill-up day is 34 days from now.

The tank I have I bought at the Pet Store that I work at because of employee discount and happened to be the size I wanted. My question is this, I removed the top band from my aquarium as I disliked the way it looked and how much of an inner rim it had. I then siliconed a piece of glass along the top for extra support. Is this a good idea? Useless? Should my tank be fine without the plastic and no glass support? Any reply is appreciated.

This is a question for my husband so I am going to had over the key board to him!! : )

The tank needs that band that goes around the tank. The silicone that holds the glass together is there to keep the water in not to hold the glass together. The plastic band makes up for the glasses lack of tinsel strength. If the tank is plastic then maybe, but the glass will simply break. Also that piece of glass across the top would have been a good idea to substitute for the plastic rim but glass will not stretch, it will just break. Also servicing the tank will be a real pain with it there. There are glass covers for your tank to keep things out but not for structural solutions. You could trim down the rim slightly if needed but it is there for a reason, to hold everything together. :)

Acylic is nice.....but it does scratch easily. Just a word of warning there. And it is a bit more expensive.

    .......And welcome to 3reef.
