Hello guys and gals I am new here and hope to find some great advice and over time hope to give it as well. I have a 75 gallon salt with 4 pc canister filter emperor filter and protein skimmer which I am still trying to find out how to use correctly. How can you tell if you have the right air mixture going on with the skimmer? And also my tank has been set up for 2 weeks now and have and explosion of the wonderful brown algae. Should I just let the brown algae go and it will eventually starve it self out or get taken over with with good algae or should I try to clean it a little? I have a couple snails and some blue and red legged hermits in there with one green chromis. Any help on my skimmer and algae is greatly appreciate. I know my tank has to go through a cycle and am very patient person so point me in the right direction.

Welcome to 3reef. Its only been 2 weeks, the brown algae will go away by its self after you finish your cycle. As for the skimmer, when the skimmer produces a brown foamy skimmate, not to dry or wet. Luna

Thank you for the welcome and advice. Is the skimmer supposed to make a lot of bubble floating in the main aquarium as well. This one came with the tank and I'm sure this one is not the best money can buy. I have never used one before.

Most skimmers have an air valve to control the air intake. If yours doesnt, place a sponge where the water comes out and that will eliminate the excess bubbles. Do you know what kind of skimmer it is? Luna

The diatom(brown algae) problem you are having is part of your cycling process and will clear up at some point during the cycle...

Luna I will find out what kind the skimmer is when I get back home I am visiting the parents today and it does have a air control valve but no matter if I close it all the way I still get the tiny bubbles filling the tank. I'll get back to you on the make and model. Thanks for your time and thanks to all that has welcomed me to the site.
