I would get a RO/DI filter. I bought a refurbished spectrapure RO/DI filter for 140.00. It is doing the trick and after reading all over on forums and articles it is one of the best investments. Also the Lighting you bought sounds like one of those odyssea light fixtures. If so I have been warned against buying them, because the T5 fixture does not have reflectors for each light and that reduces the fixtures lighting strength. My thoughts about lighting are simple, go all out on your lighting as it will save you money in the long run.

Also don't skimp on the skimmer. While cycling you have around 2 months to save for other things. Skimmers are not required for a FOWLR but IMO they are for a Reef system. If you are planning on going reef right after the cycle then those purchases are necessary.

My tanks are cycling right now with HOB filters, and I will keep them until I build a stand and sump. But then again I may keep them running in my sump to help with a QT tank setup. I plan on building up to a reef aquarium, but am going to save money and build my tank as I get funds. My first purchase after I get me some CuC and fish is a Skimmer.
