Hi, I just joined. I hope someone can help me.
I just cleaned and refilled my 55gal fresh water tank. I let it run empty for 2 weeks I put a few fish in and a week later I have a rust colored algea on stones, sides and decorations, and it's getting worse. I didn't add the water from the bag. Does anyone have any idea what this is and how to treat it?

Sorry penny I'm not a Fresh water person, but it sounds like maybe your source water is high in nitrate or phosphate and this is causing an algae bloom.

Thanks for just replying. I'll see if keeping the light off helps and I'll get a test kit. I have 4 tanks, 2 10g 1 45g and 1 55g all FW never had any problem I couldn't fix. Before this problem, which I've never seen before I was thinking of changing one over to SW. Now I guess I better just figure this out and be happy

    hey

    firstly welcome to 3reef

this algea is caused by new tank syndrome. i had it when i set mine up. what i did is feead them a bit less. clean it off with a proper brush and it is now stopped except for a small patch which i allow to grow for my snail to eat

Must have left the lights on too long?
I just set my tank up and left the lights on too long. Had teh same algae youre talking about. Had to cut back on lights and get Phos-zorb pillow as recommended by other users. Worked pretty good.

Hello and again...welcome to 3reef! Best of luck with your tanks and I wouldn't hesitate to cross over to salt!!! Just do some reading and research on the hobby becuase it does have many differences, but it also comes with alot of rewards and enjoyment as well!
