So, the tank is a 60 gal petsmart tank, aka tall and narrow. I have a Cin Tom Clown that's about 3" dia and a Tomomi Tang. The clown is 3+ years old, the tang is a month old in the tank.

The clown is pretty content with his nem, the tang loves to dance in and out of the rocks. I'm thinking of something on the bottom that would be pretty active. Then I would also want something that swims more up in the water column. I don't want to add them at the same time, unless there's a really good reason...

I was thinking of a fire fish, how hard is it to find a mated pair? And would they be fine with a clown and a tang?

The lower guy, I was thinking something like a goby. Maybe this goby?
I like the idea of mated pairs as well.

Concerns and criticism welcome! I want the plan figured out before payday ::) :biggrinbo

    Thanks!

That tank just isn't nearly big enough for the tang - you'll have to get rid of it fast. I'd look into replacing it with a small wrasse as they tend to weave through the rocks. A firefish or that goby should work - you'll just have to get fish that don't need a lot of swimming space since most like to swim horizontally, not vertically.

I think either of those choices would be great. I had a fire fish once that jumped because I had an open top (obviously this is fixed now), but in saying that I have always wanted one of those bluespot watchmans.

Either of those would be fine with the clown or the tang. Personally if it was me, I would go with the bluespotted watchman because it has a little different colouration that is common to most aquarium fish eg. yellows and blues.

I think the bluespot watchman would be a more bottom fish than the firefish as firefish tend to hang in water coloumns as well. But you will have ample room for both if you really wanted. A 60g is more than capable of handling 5-6 fish. My 55g has a flame angel, two clowns, a bristletooth tang, a cleaner wrasse and court jester goby.

This is a very broad statement. People just hear tang and then go must have ridiculously sized tanks. It is not always the case.

I believe that a tomini could be held in a 55g-60g, but I do agree with you in that it should probably be a 55g-60g long than a cube.

I know many people love firefish in a reef tank. Just be cautious that your clown doesn't start to get a little aggressive toward it in just keep an eye on it. I think a goby is a great idea. I have a pink spotted goby and love him. He's got a ton of character and moves around quite frequently. Have you thought about a goby/pistol shrimp pair? I think the goby you picked is a shrimp goby so probably is compatible with a type of pistol. They form a symbiotic relationship that is really cool to see. The pistol does dig a lot of tunnels in the rock so you need to be ok with sand piles and messes but they are such a cool addition to the tank. They make loud pop noises - kind of unique. HTH.

I vote for Melanurus Wrasse, male. Very colorful active fish, and extremely effective at removing pests.

    He's awesome!

I am very cautious with the tang, the tank is a 48" long tank and he has a ton of room to get in and out of rocks/caves. If he get's too big, then he'll get traded in.

Would the M Wrasse stay active vs a goby that likes to hang out at the bottom? Or would those two not be compatible?

    Thanks everyone!! :)

I actually have, but forgot about this last night when typing this up. I would LOVE a shrimp goby combo.

Now with that being said, would my cleaner shrimp get in the way of the pistol shrimp?

uh oh, I don't know. I added a cleaner a couple of weeks ago and I never saw it again. My pistol may have gotten it :(
