+K on that. not only for pointing out that its the only way to tell but also that it is incredibly hard to do!! I still have no idea which one i have not that it really matters. the only other difference is that false perculas are tank raised and true perculas are wild caught, at least thats what i have learned from reading up on it. and you cant tell that by looking at them. ;D

I've been told you can mix types of clownfish. Never tried it, but that's what I've read and heard.

i mean i just added a second clownfish after two years of having the 1st to my tank and i don't remember what kind that was either. i was told that the true and false perculas wont really fight with each other too much as long as the 2nd addition is half the size or smaller. mine are doing great btw!

Ocellaris and perculas can both be found in the wild actually. "False perculas" don't mean they are explicitly tank raised. On the flip side of that, there are tank raised perculas now, so does that mean they are true-false perculas? :p hehe The term "false percula" is something the marine industry used and adopted. It's really a matter of A. Percula vs. A. Ocellaris instead of false percula vs. true percula. It's splitting hairs, but it's just some useless info I guess.
Both are in the Amphiprion family, they just are found in different parts of the world. They will co-exist very well together, as long as you don't house 2 dominant females together. There are accounts of perculas and ocellaris cross mating resulting in hybrid clowns.

Percula clowns will generally "black out" on the meaty part of the body as they mature, whereas ocellaris will darken to a deep tan. That's where the saying "perculas will have a more prominent black line in between the white stripes as compared to ocellaris" has been used. I get confused too, but I think perculas have a different look to them. One thing I did notice is that my ocellaris would not host to my GBTA whereas the perculas did.

Eye color is different between the two. One has an orange eye, the other black. Darned if I can remember which is which though.

So...this is the clown i recieved. it's suppose to be a false percula bus so is the one in my DT and they look not the same. so this is my blank sided clown. Is this normal? i've never seen a clown missing the middle parts of its stripes?
