Do you have a prefilter? Could be too dirty.....clogged. Maybe there is something blocking the line from the overflow to the sump. Maybe time for some cleaning.

If you have a siphon assist overflow, the siphon might be clogged. If you have a maxijet-like PH that is connected to the overflow via an air tube, put your thumb over the 'outlet' of the PH where the water flow is coming out. That will push water through the air hose and dislodge that which is impeding suction. My best guess. It has happened to me a few times with this kind of set up.

Not being able to skim for a few day should be fine.

I would clean it weekly, or at least when you do a normal WC. Snails, etc. are also notorius for getting trapped in siphon tubes and causing floods, make sure you have a screen over the overflow too.

I know nothing about duncans......but Xenia are just weird. Now, by dead xenia, do you mean xenia that looks just flat out bad or did it melt away. Dead Xenia melts away and disappears into oblivion. Xenia that is shrivelled up and non responsive is just stressed. Wait until your skimming starts regulating the tank again and see what happens.

one polyp of my duncan has looked dead before..all closed up and ugly. I moved it to a better spot with better flow and it was fine in a day or 2..maybe just reacting to loss of skimmer
