    Hello-

I was curious, if I was to build a 24" long by 11'' wide sump (probably 14'' tall?)

how much space inside the sump would I have to allocate for a protein skimmer with a foot print of 10.5'' x 7.5''?

I just want a simple setup assuming a fuge, skimmer, and return area thats all. I don't want to build this wrong so if anyone can help I would appreciate it.

    Sounds good. For a skimmer 10.5 x 7.5 inches I would make the compartment 11 X 12

You could to 11 x 9, but it will be a tight fit.

Check out my 90gal thread. There are a lot of detailed info when I built my 40 sump/refuge. Learn from my mistakes.. :)

I read your thread and I like your setup of the sump however what space did you allot for the intake area? also why did you chose to you use a dry return filter?

You can make a sump very small and still effective. I am using just a 5.5 gallon tank on my 29 biocube and it holds my refuge and my skimmer / heater. I think with the dimensions you listed you could build a very effective sump. Picture below:

that is a very cool sump, but I have an in sump skimmer... so doesnt it need to be with in boundaries of my sump. If I could put it in a 10 gallon that would work but I would love to know how.

huh?? Dry return filter? I don't.. The filter on the refuge was temp. When I added the live sand to it, it wouldn't create such a bad sand storm in my DT.

As for intake you talking about the return or drain?

yea no idea why it came out like that. What i mean by a dry filter is that it appears your protein skimmer is not within the boundaries of the sump itself, can all skimmers be run this way?

Yes it is.. My skimmer is in my middle chamber. What you see outside the sump is my external 5L waste collector. Depending on the skimmer, you can run it inside or outside your sump. Which mine can run either or.
