You will probably get a whole range of recommendations on this one!

I've been growing softies up to montis under a 2 bulb t5ho in my 30 gallon. They grow better once I added an extra light, but not bad for $100.

A couple of 250 halides would probably be plenty of light, depending on your tank dimensions. And you can pick those up fairly cheap used. The trouble with used is that you'll probably need to replace the bulbs, that is a big chunk of the cost and sometimes not always apparent. But I'd imagine that $300 could get you pretty far if you are willing to watch craigslist and ask your LFS to keep an eye out and wait for the right item to come along.

If you want a nice neat fixture that will have all the bells and whistles, then yes, it will not come cheaply.

Should i upgrade the bulbs? Or are those bulbs good? What if i took my orphek pr3 leds and built a fixture so that they could mount on top of the 75 along with the t5 system? And use them as more of spotlights ontop of my dersea clam? And other corals?
