Hello guys. I am down in Daytona Beach Florida for spring break. I was wondering if i could collect some sand from down here from the beach. I was wondering if I should collect it from where the water washes up or from inside the ocean from the floor. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Is this okay to do or will it cause havoc in my tank? Should I cook the sand or something or is there other methods if needed at all? Thanks GUys

With all of the work and possible problems, both technical and legal, I'd say just buy it at home. I mean, how much were you planning on getting? You can get real nice white playground sand at most places for <$.50/lb.

Its not to technical or illegal. I can just collect it and bring it back home with me in a cooler. I have many spots I can get it from. I wanted it more for the sentimental value then the cost. I will prob pick up around 50lbs or so Im not to sure. Plus I love daytona beach sand and can never find it.

I wouldn't do it. Most of the pollution washes ashore & leaches into the sand.

Don't take a chance of that back firing on you and your tank!

Thats a bad idea because in the sand there are most likely pollutions and you could probably get some stuff in your tank which you wouldn't want.... Never collect items from beaches to put in your tank, your just asking for problems....

B.S. Our last tank included a BUNCH of live rock and other small stuff we collected from Kure Beach (N.C.) and we never had a single problem. It was very cool to look in the tank and see all the cool stuff we'd personally collected. Matter of fact, about 60% to 70% of the live rock in that aquarium was the rocks we collected. We kept those rocks through the years, and now they are in our new tank. They are now slowly coming to life again, and I wouldn't trade them for any amount of money. There are likely more pollutants in your tap water then there will be from beach collected stuff (depending of course on what beach they were collected from!).

If it's a new tank, I say bring it all home and enjoy it. Rinse it well in clean salt water, and put it in there. If there are any pollutants, you can deal with Eradicating them as needed. That tank will end up with a little "mojo" you just can't get with stuff you buy from the LFS.

Okay, I collected about 50-60lbs of some sand that was out of the ocean. I want to add it to the tank as it is very beautiful sand and I have never seen this kind of sand in my life. Also I want it as there is a sentimental value to it. Okay, I am now wondering if I should just rinse it out in salt water washing it int he salt water, bake it in the oven to kill all the bad stuff, or do a bleach clean for a couple days then clean that with salt water for a while. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

Sorry for asking all your guys opinion on collecting it or not. I just couldn't pass it up I love that sand.

It came from Daytona Beach, Fl. Note: I live in New York :)

I wouldn't bleach it - it'll take too much to get the chlorine out. If anything bake it. You're not far from me. If you're looking for a couple good lfs in the Buffalo area let me know & I can hook you up.
