    Hey guys,

Bit distressing atm. Over the last day, I have noticed the heads of my big green torch closing up on one side, today, they are completely dead. They look like they are decaying. One side of the torch is still good.

I have not done anything different to the tank for a few weeks.

    My params:

    SG:1.025
    Alk: 9.5dkH
    Ca: 400
    Mg: 1400
Ammo: 0-0.25 (possibly because of some decaying coral)
    Nitrate: 0
    pH: 8-8.2
    Phos 0-0.25.

So im not really 100% sure what to do. I have had another gonipora that was close to it start to die also, its nearly completely gone.

The other torch next to that torch looks fine.

Im not sure what to do. Should I cut the colony in half to try and save half the coral?

    Help. :(

Any signs of brown jelly or other critters?

Im kind of slowly loosing a wal hammer myself that was a new addition a couple months ago while all my other lps are doing great including a hammer and 3 frogspawn colonies. Searching for answers myself best of luck to you though! If it is branching and some of the heads are completely dead I would frag the coral in hopes of saving the healthIER heads FWIW

Yes, there are some brown jelly type substance on some of the dead heads. What is that?

Tomorrow night if there is no sign of it slowing down I will frag the remaining unaffected heads.

Do a quick search on this site for brown jelly disease. I think you're going to want to remove the piece and flush the brown jelly out with tank water. There may be a step prior to that as well.

EDIT: Do a dip in Lugol's dip prior to flushing.

I'm not familiar with that, but should work IF it's a coral dip/medication.

I've not used iodine based dips (I use Coral RX Pro), but remember reading somewhere that you may experience some discoloration for a while when using it on LPS.

Its not designed for that purpose. Pretty sure its just an iodide additive for inverts.

I have removed the coral, gave it a good clean with a new clean toothbrush and removed all of the necrotic tissue/ brown jelly from the coral. You can definately see some heads are dead.

I hope now that I removed all that stuff, it doesn't move onto the other heads.

Will know more tomorrow morning. Will post when I wake up :) (Approx 9 hours from now) and I will have a better idea how the coral is going.

    Thanks for all your assistance.

you should't have any measurable ammonia... you may want to pick up a bacteria in a bottle product and put some in. the more die off you experience, the more your ammo, nitrite & nitrate may begin to spiral out of control
