Last night when I went to bed my favia looked great this morning I awoke to see it looking like this. Does anyone know whats going on and if it can be saved. Nothing else in the tank is affected, and its not close enough to anythng to be getting stung. Any help would be appreciated. Should I take it out or leave it alone?

    Thanks

I had a favia do this once. I came home from a weekend away and it was covered in white slime. I'm not sure if there is anything you can do, but mine was a goner in a day or two..

That slime is a mucus coating because it is trying to get itself clean. Increase your flow and I think you will see it go away.

I think that an iodine dip with TM Pro Coral Cure or similar will should help.

Thanks for the tip. I dipped my favia in Lugols as per the instructions and it looks as though it is going to recover. No more flesh coming off and it is looking better. I did lose about half of it, although it looks as if it is starting to grow back.

First off I just want to say that I believe that your Brain Coral is a Favites sp. rather than Favia. The reason for this is that Favites share a common corallite wall with other corallites whereas Favia have a distinct and separate wall between its corallites.

    Enough of the anatomy stuff...
As for saving your coral, dipping may sometimes work. If this doesn't work, try cutting the coral with a saw(maybe a friend or local pet shop has one that they use for fragging larger hermatypic corals). When you cut the coral, cut the coral through the healthy part of the corals tissue to ensure that their is no infected tissue still intact on the healthy part of the coral or the recession/tissue neucrosis etc. will continue to effect the healthy part.
    Good luck!

Yes it is a Favite, it was sold to me as a Favia, I did some reading about them and learned the difference. Thanks though for mentioning it. It was doing really well at one time and I took to a local frag swap among local club members and there was a fellow there that brought his really little band saw that he uses for fragging and fragged it in half for me. The side that started dying off was where it was cut. Its doing much better after the dip. I was in a rush to get it back in the tank after it was fragged and I didnt dip it in any kind of coral dip and I think thats what caused it, although it was cut about 2 months ago. My hermit crabs were all over it when it was covered with that slime, they ate everything that looked like it was decaying, now that its clean and on the mend they leave it alone.
