I recently bought 2 feather dusters. I carefully positioned them and theyve done well for 2 weeks. Last night, I found one of the dusters completely separated from its gray tube ...which had floated to the other end of the tank. The duster is open (obviously) and its 2 inch long tube is red but appears ok. Will it survive and rebuild its tube again or is it doomed to a long slow death? PLEASE HELP ...what can I do? ...and THANK YOU!

What are your nitrate levels? They don't like high nitrates.

Put the tube near the worm. They will often crawl back in. If not, assuming you have a fine sand substrate, gently cover the worms body with a little sand so it can grow a new one.

Are you saying that the crown blew off? Mine did that shortly after acclimating. The worm is still actually in the tube and will regrow its crown if that is the case.

I did put the empty tube near the dusters red body. However, I also buried the end of the tube in the sand so the duster wouldnt drift around too much. He looked fine when I left for work this morning. My nitrate and nitrite levels are nearly perfect =). Your replies are very much appreciated. Im anxious to see his status when I get home later today. FYI ...clacium levels are right on too.

To NewReef15... I have no clue how this happened. He was normal when i went to bed and i found it this morning.
To IshyMishy... If my knowledge is correct (bear with my lack of knowledge here...), the crown is the actual head or feathery part. It is still intact and is attached to a 2-3 inch red tube. Perhaps this provides you with the info you asked...?

PS- All of the tank inhabitants are very passive and get along well.

GREAT NEWS! As mentioned above, I slightly buried the red tube in the sand and surrounded it by a few small rocks ...the duster has already begun to form the "gray" tube just under the head!
