blast it with a turkey baster to get it all off, will close up for a day or so but be fine afterward, that stuff like wont die so dont worry about hurting it

If you are having that bad of an algea outbreak then you need to address getting rid of the nutrients in your system which the algea is feeding from. You can blast the stars all you want with a turkey baster to remove the algea but it will just keep coming back and it will turn into a chore. I wouldn't dare add any more coral in the tank either if the algea is that bad to smother out star polyps. Find out where the nutrients are coming from. most commonly the problem is from overfeeding, using tap water or not rinsing frozen foods. Good luck.
