So I've got a little problem in my tank that I'm hoping I can get some opinions on...

I've got a wonderful catspaw sps that has been growing quite well for more than a year. Suddenly about four days ago it started losing color and the polyps pulled in.

    Two things of note:

    1) I found that my Kalk dosing line was pinched so the tank had not been getting most of its calc drip. The alk had dropped to about 7.5 from about 11. I do not know how quickly the drop occurred.

    2) There is a green polyp leather coral that is fairly close to (and upstream of) the catspaw. It has been growing signfificantly and is getting big.

So I have two thoughts on what might have distressed the catspaw. First is that the kalk stoppage caused a rapid change in water parameters that stressed it out. Second is that the green polyped leather has finally gotten big enough to really start some chemical warfare.

So now I'm looking for advice. Should I get rid of the green leather? It is really an amazing coral with electric green polyps and I hate to take it out, but the catspaw is just as amazing and I would absolutely hate to lose it.

Do I let my water parameters stabilize and hope it's not the leather?

Sinularia are know for putting out a lot of chemical warfare. Change your carbon more often and move the location of it and/or the catspaw.

I don't believe it's a sinularia. It is more like a toadstool with bright green polyps. I'll get a picture of it when I get home and post.

    Oh,

Based on the description, that's what I assumed. It doesn't make much difference though. Green Sarcophyton put out a lot of noxious chemicals too.

I accidentally posted this on another thread:

Here is a pic of the leather. You can see the catspaw hurting in the lower right corner.

As an additional note, I'm taking the leather out of the tank.
