    Hi All,

I have uploaded 2 pictures from my tank.

These pictures are the strange plants that are growing on my live rock. Does anyone know what plants these are and should I leave them in or pull them out ?

    Any info is appreciated !!

    Thanks

I believe the first pic is a type of Brown algae called "Sargassum sp. Cebu"  I had it in my tank for some time and finally ripped it out by hand.  Some have tried to keep it as a food source for fish but my Tang was uninterested.
It's not a bad form of algae unless you don't want it.  It will continue to grow very bushy.

The second is "Halimeda macroloba" a form of Green Algae that actually has a sceliton of calcium carbonate. Again only a bad thing if you don't like it. I also had some of that but unfortunately it didn't survive some major moving of RL I did

Halemedia is cool if you can keep it. Indicates good calcium levels.

Sargassum will over run your tank if left unchecked. Indicates nitrates are present. Don't over feed.

yep first pic is sargassam the 2nd halmedia. the sargassam is a common plant in new aquariums i had it for a while. it grows like crazy and when it does you have to just keep pulling it out. but it doenst usually last a long time in most aquariums it eventually burns itself out. mine lasted a couple of months but i got to the point i didnt have to pull it out anymore it grew less and less and eventually dissapeared. its just basically a deal with it alge kind of like the diatom stage.

the halmedia if its growing good just trim it up to keep it in check. its supposed to be a hard plant to keep but if yours grows like mine trim it up from time to time. its actually not a bad looking plant. if you check out my pics you can see what mine gets to lookin like before trimming you cant miss it, it gets so huge. most people are lucky to have it grow a couple inches in a year where ive cut out 2 feet plus sections of it within weeks.
