my 6 year old grandson thought he would help me while i was out of town for one night and poured a quarter bottle of tech-m in my tank. he has seen me dose other things and was around when i said i was going to work on the tank when i got back home. when i did my testing everything was great till i did my mag test and then i did it 3 more times to be sure and it was over 3000 each time, my iodine was zero!!!!!!!!!!
how in the world do fix this!!!! and what are the ramafications of all this?

Wow. That's a helpful little boy!!

Of course, the only way to rectify this is through dilution, i.e. water change. Although I don't know the consequences of such a high magnesium level, the way to cut quickly any high levels of really anything, is to dilute the water.

Work on changing gradually 50% of your water, and that will bring it down to half the current level.

Maybe someone who knows more can chime in on whether or not this constitutes an emergency.

What do the inhabitants of your tank look like? Are any organisms clearly stressed? If so, get on it! If not, I'd still not wait around.

    Good luck!

From what I understand a quick water change like sparky mentioned would be best, how big is the tank? Do you have emergency saltwater already made up? I don't think this is a code blue super emergency but not a good thing.

May even want to consider doing w/c's with low grade salt. Lower mg levels, but, an issue with nitrate/phosphate.

I would have her mix up about 20-25 gal saltwater so that it is ready for you to do a water change with tomorrow. Then when you get home you should be able to do a water change and the problem will be fine. Just have her watch inhabitants closely for any ill behavior, hell with any luck your corals may double in size the next 24 hours! Once again, this is to my best knowledge, someone else may be able to help further... hope I could help out...

Maybe she's doing the Mag test wrong. It is one of the most difficult tests to do.
I wouldn't worry about having her mixing up water ahead of time. If you're using Red Sea, I.O., etc... the mix will be ready to go in 5 minutes as soon as the water clears. I never let my new w/c water sit overnight and have no problems with adding it.

When you get home re-test your parameters, do a 40-50% w/c if the Mag is as high as your wife says it is, wait an hour to let the tank water circulate, then re-test your parameters.

By fallout, he means is there free calcuim precipitating out of the water mixture and building up in deposits in your tank, on the pumps, etc...
