I built a DIY Refugium/Sump Tank setup with a 40 gallon aquarium for my 120 gallon reef tank. I made it into 3 compartments. The first holds the protein skimmer which is about a 15 gallon compartment, The second holds the refugium which only has sand and a bit of algea with a couple pieces of live rock, and it contains around 20 gallons. The last compartment holds my return pump and is around 5 gallons. Basically what I am asking is for everyones help in making my refugium optimal. What would your expert opinion be in stocking my Refugium and how would you do it. +K for awesome ideas.

I would get a few mangroves, live sand or fiji mud, and some macro algae (chaeto, seagrapes, etc) that will really help keep your nitrates down.. some people put seahorse,pods,etc.. too..

Well first of chaeto is a must have in a refugium, you can also make a mangrove "forest" in there. All very beneficial for nitrites and impurities and pod production.

You can order both of this from reefcleaners.org..

Best site ever. John has a very nice customer service. :)
