This is a saltwater fish in my father in law's house. He got him about 3 months ago and since then he has been growing extremely fast!! He probably grew about 6 inches in the last 3 months.. He is about 10 inches long now. We have no clue what kind of fish he is.

Whatever it is with that kind of growth it will most likely outgrow the tank very shortly if not already.

It's a Remora. Shark sucker. It's going to out grow that tank real fast

Can't tell if it has whiskers or not. Looks similar to a coral catfish but the fins don't look right for that.

Man, did you google pics of Cobia? If that's what it is, you're in big trouble LOL.

I don't know if it's cobia or not but if you google cobia fish farms there are several pics that look like it. Here is one.

    Where'd he get the fish?

If it's a Remora or Cobria it definitely is going to outgrow any tank incredibly fast.

Here's something on Remora in a home aquarium:

They are horrible tank inhabitants. Without a shark to latch onto, they can't live their normal life so they spend most of the time latched onto the glass. They are voracious eaters that are like other gulp predators (lionfish, groupers, etc) and you will have a hard time getting any food to your other fish. Any other small fish or shrimp in the tank will be eaten quickly.

These fish should be left in sea where they can live a natural existence, unless you have a tremendous shark exhibit in your home.

And if he's neither of the above, if he's growing that fast, he is going to get way too big for that tank in no time.

Fins don't look right for a remora, at least not from the pics I looked at. Also doesn't have the right mouth for that.
