UM, let me think about it...I still have all my fingers so I guess NO!:bouncylau

I had been reading a lot about these guys, but NEVER thought I would get one. The store I go to had couple of them as "pets" and I would go in there and look at them, and even brought in little snacks for them...mainly crabs that have gone bad!

But my desire to have the odd and unusual saltwater items drew me to him. Like I said, I had been reading up on mantis for the last couple months, but I did surprise myself with this purchase. Just like I surprised myself with an eel purchase when I had my FOWLR tank....

He is so cool to watch....and it is fun to see all the name suggestions come in. I love everyone that has come in so far...I am horrible at picking names.

We had trouble naming a cat once. Went through a lot of names that did not fit. Soon we gave up and named him Bob. That's my entry

    Bob

I named a baby dog face puffer Oscar..after my pug that I had to put down right before I got the fish. The fish reminded me of Oscar...his facial markings and such (Oscar is the dog in my avatar). Well I had a tank crash and Oscar the fish puffed and died and I absolutely lost it...I sat there and cried over this fish, had these memories of Oscar the dog, the whole works. I had dreams about the dog and the fish for a long time after that. The morale of the story...dont name something after an animal that just recently died.

However, the story of how Oscar the fish had his burial is actually kind of funny now...as he puffed again in the drain pipe of the toilet and caused it to overflow....he was dead prior to his flushing as he was out of water for several minutes prior as I was waiting for him to deflate...but appearantly he had 1 good puff left in him and waited until he hit the curved pipe in the toilet....water went everywhere. I had to wait until he deflated again. I thought for sure I was going to have to get a plumber out to take care of that problem. Can you imagine me explaining that one! Well sir, my diet had been causing me a little....:toilet::laughy:

I had been tossing around 3 names actually:
    1. Monty...From Monty Python and Monty the Praying Mantis
    2. Dont laugh...Charlie. I have a 32 year old pot bellied bear that I got for Christmas when I was 3 from Santa. I loved that thing and I still have it. I kind of want a name that is friendly and nice, as I dont want to be overly afraid of this thing. I want to respect its power, but I dont want to be afraid.
    3. Killer was my first instinct name..however I had a lionfish named killer. He earned that reputation! He was my parents lion, and they no longer wanted it..so I had to transfer him to my tank. Well I got stung on 3 fingers, one finger really bad. It hurt like........ I vomitted, sweated, pain lasted for a while..seemed like forever. I then developed an infection where he stung me..so being stupid...I lanced it myself. Lucky no problems. But I was afraid of that fish for a while, so I put it out to the guys at the LFS that I wanted to get rid of it, but they had to come and get it. It took a couple months for this kid to get his tank set up at his day job. Well by this time, killer and I had an understanding. He does not try to kill me, I feed him. When it was time for killer to go, I was sad. But he went to a good guy. He said that fish would dive bomb him everytime he tried to clean that tank..normally lions are laid back....he was pissed. He finally got him calmed down and somebody at his day job thought it would be funny as he got fired and poured a bottle of hot sauce in the tank and killed Killer:cry:.

But I dont want any self-fufilling prophecies..so Killer is out!

I only have one fish with a name, and thats my auratus cichlid Frank, hes quite a character. has his own 10 gallon hex tank since he's pretty mean. also called my 2 clowns the doobie brothers before one passed in a crash...I usually just pick a name that doesnt seem to fit but catches on like frank, so I think if it was my mantis I would call him carl.
