Ended up getting a Giant Defy. Before you cringe about the lack of 105 set, I much preferred the seating position on the Giant which suited my long distance needs.

psh! those bikes are for pansies, get a real bike like this.

    Slash 9 - Trek Bicycle

this is a slightly newer version of the one i ahve and i love it! also got a haro dirt jumper, great little bike. of course one thing you never want to do is buy a bike new, they lose value faster than a freaking foreign car.

Haro Bikes - Freestyle MTB - Steel Reserve 1.8

lets see you ride more more then 15-20 miles at a time on either of those at a 23mph pace ;) then see who has a pansies bike.

FWIW i have Specialized Bicycle Components : Stumpjumper FSR Comp this out in the garage also

    nice bike!

my thought process is a mountain bike you can rider anywhere, snowy trails, extremely rocky terrain, or just a paved bike trail or road. whereas a road bike you are extremely limited, only to very smooth paved trails and sidewalks.

lets see you ride 5 miles on some rocky moab trails on one of those bikes ;)

Yeah, the Allez's reach was a bit too long and I couldn't do more than 15 miles in it.

a few years ago i did a multi terrain bike race from colorado springs to denver. im not saying it was not hard but it proves that a mountain bike is just as capable at going long distances though. however a road bike will do it much quicker.
