I received a 2006 Consumer Confidence Report for Huntington Beach CA, and essentialy it is the water testing reports. It has all kinds of numbers relating to water quality.

My question is, what should I be looking for to determine if my local water is good or bad for my tank. Here are some of the values that I though might be helpful. Maybe you guys could tell me what else is important.

    Nitrate as NO3 - 2 ppm
    Nitrate + Nitrite - <0.4 ppm
    PH - 8.1 (units)
    Calcium - 71 ppm
    Hardness - 251 ppm
    Hardness - 15 grains/gal
    Alkilinity - 154 ppm

Ther are probably 50 other measurments included. Tell me what you think.

Those other 50 measurements could be silicates, phosphates, arsenic, lead, copper, iron, cyanide, flouride, manganese etc. etc. Your best bet is to invest in an r.o. unit and avoid using straight tap water. :)

I would try to get the pH up to 8.3 Although it is not that large a difference, some corals can be sensitive to it. One example is Xenia. They will not pulse with a low pH.

I believe this is his tap water readings not his tank water. ;)

I agree I would invest in a RO/Di unit John

Wow, those are some high readings for tap water. 8.1 ph and a bunch of other junk?

    +1 on RODI

I tested my tap water and these are the readings I got:
    Nitrate - 10-15 ppm
    Nitrite - 0 ppm
    PH - 7.2
    Sg - 1.002
