A short term variation on the fridge mod is to just put the coil of tubing in a cooler full of ice. (No skill required). The cooler will help keep your ice cold and you won't be replacing ice packs every half hour. Adjust the amount of coil so that you don't shock the tank with a rapid decrease in temperature and once you have reached temperature, remove some coil or you will just be cooling with the ice bath and then heating with your heater.

I've had the fan going non-stop for the last three days. Temp steady at 79*.
As a result obviously my water level has dropped so I need to replenish it.

Question: Do I pour only water or water/salt mix?

    Thanks in advance.

sssnake, since salt does not evaporate you will want to put only fresh water. Note: when adding in "top off water" you will want to make sure that the water is near tank temp and possibly adding in a PH buffer so that you do not effect your tanks level. I catch myself adding in RO/DI water and wodering my my PH is low. So answer to your question is Water only.

    Berlin Joe,
IMHO, since heat has been a problem, I would suggest that top-off water should be a bit cooler than the tank water. In a 12 gallon Nano, 1/4 to 1/2 gallon of water that is 10 degrees cooler than the tank water will probably not shock any of the inhabitants.
